Tax Summary
- Vermont has five income tax brackets ranging from 3.6% to 9.5% depending upon your level of income.
- The personal exemption for a single individual is $3,000, and for a married couple is $6,000. Each child receives a personal exemption of $3,000.
- Sales tax in Vermont is 6%, imposed on sales of tangible personal property, amusement charges, some public utilities and some service contracts.
- Exemptions include food, clothing, shoes costing less than $110, medical items, and fuel.
- Beginning in July 1, 2004, the property tax will be imposed statewide for educational purposes. The homestead school property tax rate will be $1.10 per $100 of property, while non-homestead properties will be taxed at $1.59 per $100 of property.
- There are partial property tax rebates for primary residences.
