Tax Summary
- Minnesota has three separate tax brackets between 5.35% and 7.85% depending upon income level.
- Personal exemption for a single individual is $3,000. Exemption for a married couple is $6,000. Dependents earn an exemption of $3,000 each.
- State sales tax is generally 6.5%, plus whatever local taxes are levied by municipalities.
- The tax on liquor and beer is 9%, and motor vehicle rental tax is 12.7%.
- Minnesota administers a use tax for items purchased out of state but used in Minnesota.
- Property taxes are administered and assessed by the local counties. The tax bills are determined by property value, property classification and cost of local services provided.
- There is a homeowners property tax refund available.
