Tax Summary
- Louisiana has three different tax brackets ranging from 2% to 6% depending upon how much you earn.
- Personal exemption for a single individual is $4,500. Exemption for a married couple is $9,000. Dependents earn an exemption of $1,000 each.
- Up to $6,000 of retirement income received by those 65 and older may be exempt.
- Sales tax in Louisiana is 4%, of which 3.97% is straight sales tax and .03% is the Louisiana Tourism Promotion District sales tax.
- Political subdivisions may have an additional local sales tax.
- Property taxes are assessed and collected at the parish and municipal level according to the following scales based on percentage of fair market value:
- Land: 10%
- Residential improvements: 10%
- Electrical cooperatives: 15%
- Public services: 25%
- Other properties: 15%
- There is a homestead exemption on primary residences up to $75,000.
- There are intangible property taxes levied on public service properties, bank stock, and insurance, loan and finance premiums.
