Tax Summary
- Hawaii assesses income tax on a sliding scale from 1.4% to 8.25% depending upon how much you earn.
- The maximum tax on capital gains is 7.25%
- Personal exemption for a single individual is $1,040. Exemption for a married couple is $2,080. Dependents earn an exemption of $1,040 each.
- Hawaii does not have a traditional "sales tax." They have a 4% excise tax assessed on all business activities, including retail sales, rental income, commissions and services provided.
- Wholesale tax is .05%.
- Real property taxes are assessed at 100% of fair market value. Taxes are administered by the counties of Honolulu, Hawaii, Maui, and Kauai.
- Property tax exemptions are allowed for homes used for primary residences. There are also various exemptions for the elderly.
- There is no personal property tax.
