Tax Summary
- Alabama assesses income tax on a sliding scale (either 2%, 4% or 5%) depending upon how much you earn.
- Taxpayers can deduct Federal Income Tax paid from the gross income.
- Personal exemption for a single individual is $1,500. Exemption for a married couple is $3,000. Dependents earn an exemption of $300 each.
- Sales tax in Alabama is 4%, although some cities add their own city sales taxes as well.
- Property taxes are determined by individual counties based on millages. Statewide, there is a $5,000 homestead exemption, with a higher exemption for the elderly.
- There are no Alabama state inheritance taxes.
